Keep existing heat meters: build a wireless reading link with KC22

M-Bus heat meters connect through KC22 collectors, LoRaWAN gateways and ThinkLink for remote meter reading. Adapted from the previous smart-heating article, with a focus on device roles and checks before retrofitting.

Keep the meters and add the data connection

If existing heat meters in a residential development have usable M-Bus interfaces, assess whether they can be retained. KC22 acquires the readings, the LoRaWAN gateway forwards wireless data, and ThinkLink provides centralized management and visualization.

Confirm conditions before estimating the retrofit

  • Meter models, M-Bus interfaces and protocol compatibility.
  • Bus load, meter count and site wiring.
  • Power supply, acquisition and reporting intervals.
  • Gateway placement, backhaul and measured wireless coverage.

The original article included gateway configurations and capacity and battery-life estimates for specific conditions at that time. This page retains the approach, but device counts, service life and coverage must be reassessed for current projects rather than copied from those historical figures.
